Sports hall spaces and lighting adapt to changing needs

The new 3,090 m² sports hall in Tervakoski, Delfort Arena, has been completed to serve local residents. The project met energy‑efficiency requirements with low life‑cycle and energy costs, thereby contributing to a reduction in the municipality’s climate and environmental impact.

For the lighting solutions, purpose‑designed led luminaires with wireless Casambi control were selected for each space. During commissioning, the lighting levels of the Casambi‑controlled luminaires were set according to the designer’s guidelines to optimal levels for different usage scenarios: school physical education classes, recreational sports for residents, festive events and competitive sports.

The construction progressed according to schedule

Construction began in autumn 2019, and the project was completed ahead of schedule in January 2021. A high‑quality end result was ensured through cooperation between the Municipality of Janakkala, Granlund Häme responsible for electrical design, and Sähkö‑Jore Oy, which carried out the electrical installation as a subcontractor to the main contractor YIT Suomi Oy. The hall will be taken into sports use in spring as soon as exceptional circumstances allow. At present, the hall functions very well as a spacious COVID‑19 vaccination site.

Low life‑cycle and energy costs

Particular attention was paid to overall energy efficiency during the design phase. The end result achieved low life‑cycle costs and operating expenses. The targets were reached through, among other things, geothermal heating, solar panels and led lighting.

“Wireless lighting control with Casambi was a starting point in the design right from the beginning,” says Kim Lindfors from Granlund Häme Oy. “Wireless lighting control makes the designer’s work easier, as control cabling can be omitted from the design process, leaving more time and resources for other design tasks.”

Intelligent control

By optimising luminaire usage, the technical lifetime of the luminaires is extended. However, the most important factors in choosing intelligent lighting control are ease of use, user‑friendliness and low energy consumption. The starting point was lighting based on an IoT environment. In addition to lighting control, radiator valves and the extensive AV technologies installed in the sports hall have also been integrated into the wireless Casambi system operating in a mesh network.

Spaces adapt flexibly – so does the lighting

“The sports hall serves all residents, but especially during the daytime the pupils of the nearby Tervakoski comprehensive school and upper secondary school. In the hall’s two sports courts, residents and pupils can play, for example, floorball, futsal, volleyball, basketball and badminton when the space is divided into sections using curtain partitions. On the second floor of the building, an accessible gym, a café, a gymnastics space with trampolines, and a 240‑seat grandstand have been built. Both the municipality and external organisations can arrange a wide range of events in the building for up to 800 people,” summarises Harri Turunen from the Municipality of Janakkala, describing the building’s intended use.

The lighting is controlled wirelessly

For performance events, the lighting scene can be easily changed wirelessly from normal mode to various presentation modes under AV system control. To enable this, Airam designed, manufactured, tested and supplied a flagship protocol adapter for the project. The adapter transmits data wirelessly between the AV system and the lighting. Lighting controlled via a mobile device is user‑friendly and does not require complex or difficult learning after commissioning. The caretaker of the sports centre can manage lighting levels in different spaces from their own office.

The versatile spaces of the sports hall conveniently support not only school sports activities, but also events such as traditional school dances, singing of seasonal hymns and end‑of‑term celebrations before Christmas. The hall has been designed to be adaptable and multi‑purpose: it is equipped with the latest audio technology and can be easily transformed into a new role thanks to a demountable and re‑assemblable stage.

The building does not have backup power systems in case of power outages. Airam supplied the site with an Airam Clock backup device, which ensures the correctness of time settings and eliminates changes to the Casambi system caused by possible power outages. The device keeps the settings up to date using its battery for approximately 19 hours. This allows even longer power outages to be managed without changes to the system’s time settings.

Energy savings with motion sensors

Plata luminaires installed in a suspended ceiling system were selected for corridors and the observation café next to the grandstand. In the corridors, lighting is connected to Casambi‑controlled sensors, ensuring that the luminaires are never on unnecessarily and only consume energy according to the actual lighting demand defined for the illuminance level.

Elegant Round pendant luminaires designed for public spaces provide the area with a warm, interior‑design‑oriented appearance. Low‑profile Optimus luminaires were selected for the gym lighting. Optimus luminaires are also used in equipment storage rooms, the civil defence shelter and technical spaces. Thanks to the IP44 rating, Optimus is suitable for installation in humid environments.

Programmed lighting levels in the sports hall

Steel‑framed Sport luminaires installed on the ceiling surfaces of the sports halls are equipped with ball protection. The ball protection has been tested and complies with standard VED 0710‑13. Sport luminaires produce uniform, glare‑free light without disturbing flicker, making the lighting highly suitable also for televised sports events. Granlund carried out Dialux calculations in the sports hall, gym and gymnastics hall for different lighting power levels. The lighting in the sports hall can now be easily dimmed in advance via two pre‑programmed lighting level settings to full lighting output.

The lighting was programmed to operate automatically in different areas based on predefined criteria and variables. Wireless control provides greater freedom to override automatic settings when necessary. More detailed requirements for light levels are set by the intended use of the space. In a school sports hall, 300 lux is sufficient, but in certain sports even competitive training requires 500 lux, and televised competitive sports up to 1,000 lux. The client’s design target for illuminance was 800 lux, but the Sport luminaires can provide up to 1,000 lux in the space when required.

An encouraging experience with wireless solutions

“Electrical installation for wireless Casambi control was a new experience for us. Everything went very well, and we are now implementing other Casambi‑controlled projects in this area as well, such as lighting for a private villa and a local bank branch in Hämeenlinna,” reveals Kari Immonen from Sähkö‑Jore Oy.

In all indoor luminaire selections, the criteria were to find purpose‑designed Casambi solutions. In the choice of luminaire supplier, Airam benefited from being a domestic operator in the electrical industry and from the company’s undeniably strong expertise in Casambi solutions.

Airam’s project sales are strongly involved

Mika Lindberg from Airam’s project sales was strongly involved in the luminaire selections and in providing technical support between different stakeholders, and Henry Huittinen in the commissioning of the Casambi control system. Kim Lindfors from Granlund thanks the Airam team for their service, comprehensive technical support and commitment when considering the best wireless lighting solutions, and the electrical contractor for smooth cooperation.
