ActiveAhead – wireless, self-learning smart lighting

ActiveAhead is a new type of genuinely intelligent and scalable wireless lighting solution. The system’s self-learning algorithm continuously collects information from its surroundings and learns to adapt accordingly. The solution creates versatile and flexible lighting environments and lighting situations in which there is always an optimal amount of light. Thanks to its self-learning algorithm and wireless control, the system saves both costs and energy.

Tailored solutions from Airam

ActiveAhead also meets the challenges of continuously evolving building technology. This smart lighting control method is suitable for both renovation and new-build projects: offices, public spaces, warehouses, stairwells and parking facilities. Many of Airam’s professional lighting products can be customized to be ActiveAhead-compatible, with or without a sensor.

Easy installation

Installing a luminaire equipped with ActiveAhead is easy because no control cables are needed. The self-learning and independent lighting control system consists of a built-in LED driver, a control unit and a multifunction sensor. In renovation projects, considerable savings can be achieved in spaces where installing wiring would be difficult or expensive.

In renovation projects it is also possible to control DALI luminaires with the ActiveAhead Node Advanced device, which enables DALI devices to be controlled with the wireless ActiveAhead system. Intelligence is distributed across the luminaires, and lighting is controlled wirelessly in a mesh network over BLE, Bluetooth Low Energy, using pre-programmed software. The ActiveAhead mobile app for iOS and Android can be used to adjust light levels, create luminaire groups and lighting scenes, or define button functions.

Learning algorithm

Compared with a traditionally switch-controlled luminaire, the solution creates a unique user experience: the luminaire proactively brightens the lighting and dims it intelligently according to the actual use of the space. This anticipation is based on the luminaires’ ability to learn how people move in the space and to use that information so the system adjusts lighting automatically as needed. The learning algorithm starts as soon as the luminaire is powered on. It learns the first movement patterns quite quickly when there is a lot of movement in the space.

Installation costs stay low because separate control wiring is not required. Installation is easy and fast because no separate control cabling is needed during installation.

ACTIVEAHEAD

Flexible solution

ActiveAhead control units operating in a wireless network use an intelligent AI-based algorithm to learn how the space is used. The luminaires collect information from their own sensors and from surrounding luminaires, and based on the collected data they learn to follow one another and switch lights on ahead of users as they move through the space. The system is also easy to expand later, regardless of whether the project is a renovation or a new building. ActiveAhead lighting is flexible in renovation situations because intelligent luminaires can adapt to changes in the environment, such as new partition walls and the resulting changed lighting requirements. If necessary, the self-learning function can also be turned off and the luminaires’ behavior can be defined manually.

Ideal lighting creates comfort

In office spaces, users can adjust the lighting settings of their own work area with the ActiveTune function according to personal needs and preferences. A QR code is placed at the workstation, allowing the user to control the lighting at that workstation according to personal needs. If luminaires with tunable white features have been selected for the space, users can also adjust the color temperature of the white light toward a cooler or warmer tone.

Savings in installation and energy costs

ActiveAhead has been designed for the challenges of data-driven, continuously evolving building technology. The new-generation ActiveAhead Generation 2 system can also be connected to a cloud service, making it possible to reduce building operating costs through space optimization. It is also possible to connect the Helvar Insights monitoring and maintenance service to the system, which can also link wired router systems and ActiveAhead implementations.

During use, the luminaire adjusts lighting according to actual need. Energy is saved because the luminaires respond to daylight. Energy consumption becomes more rational, electricity bills decrease and luminaire life is extended.
