“Lippulaiva is a pleasant local and nicely homely new urban centre in Espoonlahti.” That is how Lippulaiva promotes the versatile meeting place for Espoo residents completed in spring 2022. It is easy to pop into the attractive Synsam store on the first floor of the shopping centre.

According to Synsam store concept specifications, the mega-sized store displays as many as 2,500 products. In addition to spectacles, the range includes sunglasses, occupational glasses, children’s frames, contact lenses with accessories, and sports glasses for golf, cycling, sailing, skiing, alpine skiing and many other activities.

Colour rendering is a crucial property of light

Online sales of spectacles have grown significantly, but most people still prefer to choose suitable glasses in store with guidance from knowledgeable staff. “In an optician’s store, the colour tone and colour rendering of light are very important.

Small shade differences in spectacle frames and temples must be clearly distinguishable both on the sales wall and when fitting glasses against the customer’s face,” says store manager Essi Virtanen. There must also be no unpleasant surprises in daylight regarding frame and lens colours.

Lighting choices according to Synsam’s store concept

Accent luminaires placed on three-phase tracks and carefully aimed do not cause glare and create a pleasant shopping experience. Elias Takala of Hapeta Oy carries out lighting measurements and lighting plans for all Synsam stores. Synsam provides the framework for luminaire choices. The store design concept defined both technical and appearance requirements for luminaires in detail. Airam Target accent luminaires in sizes M and L met the specified luminous flux and colour rendering requirements.

Luminaires blend effortlessly into their surroundings

Against the store’s black ceiling, the sleekly shaped luminaires blend effortlessly into their surroundings and let the products themselves shine in good light. “On site in stores, Elias Takala is responsible for aiming the lighting,” says Hannu Takala of Hapeta contracting. “The light from Airam Target accent luminaires is not too pinpoint and its beam angle suits this type of store. The light must not glare, but it must present the product on sale clearly,” Takala adds.

The Airam Target luminaire family has two sizes and two body colours, white and black. In the Lippulaiva store the luminaires are black size M units at 4000 K colour temperature. The luminaire has a tilting and rotating faceted aluminium reflector at 36°, providing efficient light where it is needed. Target has an almost invisible connection device integrated directly into the three-phase track.

Light levels are adjusted continuously during eye examinations

At Lippulaiva shopping centre, Synsam opticians examine the customer’s vision thoroughly and provide expert service. During eye examinations it is necessary to adjust light levels continuously. For this reason, dimmable Plata panel luminaires with Dali control were installed in Synsam examination rooms.

Smooth delivery chain and contracting

“Cooperation with Airam has been smooth. Luminaires and their availability are good, and deliveries to the site have worked through Ahlsell electrical wholesale. There have been enough products and the planned, ordered and delivered quantities have been correct,” says Hannu Takala.

Hapeta Oy comprehensively carries out lighting installations for Synsam stores throughout Finland, and a large part of store refurbishments have already been completed. “Each store is reviewed on site with the store manager. Feedback from the customer has been positive.”
