New lighting improved the shopping centre customer experience
Kaari Shopping Centre, located in Kannelmäki, Helsinki, is a compact shopping destination. All services are close at hand: nearly 80 shops, over 10 cafés or restaurants, 1,700 parking spaces and excellent public transport connections. The appearance of Kannelmäki’s local shopping centre has now been renewed. The result is a pleasant, bright and spacious environment. This was achieved by installing striking green walls, improving circulation routes and renewing the lighting.

Kaari Shopping Centre, located in Kannelmäki, Helsinki, is a compact shopping destination. The appearance of Kannelmäki’s local shopping centre has now been renewed. The result is a pleasant, bright and spacious environment. This was achieved by installing striking green walls, improving circulation routes and renewing the lighting.
The shopping centre is partially open around the clock, which means that the lighting solutions must be long‑lasting and reliable. Bright spaces increase safety and accessibility. “We want it to be easy to move around here. We opened up sightlines, added more retail space and increased access routes to the second floor. Now the shopping centre experience is better for both our customers and the employees of the businesses operating here,” says shopping centre manager Sanna Kinnunen.
Precise installation requirements
The visual appearance was selected in accordance with the plans of architectural firm Innovarch, to match as closely as possible the look of the adjacent lobby in the new suspended ceiling. According to architect Markus Miiikkulainen, it was essential to find a solution where the lower surface of the luminaire is exactly flush with the lower surface of the ceiling. Airam Plata panel luminaires were selected for corridor and lobby areas. The strict installation accuracy requirements were met through recessed installation using a concealed trim installation kit. The technical lighting calculations for the project were carried out by Ramboll Finland Oy.
Easy and precise installation
Plata is a low‑profile luminaire that can be installed recessed, suspended with wire suspension, or surface‑mounted using a separate frame. The new installation kit designed for concealed‑trim ceilings is always required for special ceiling structures. The installation kit is compatible with all Plata luminaires. The luminaires have also received praise in comparisons for their ease of installation.
Microprism optics to reduce discomfort glare
The linkable luminaire is available in two colour temperature options, 830 and 840. The Plata luminaire is manufactured with either an opal diffuser or microprism optics. Typical applications include offices, educational facilities, hospitals and other healthcare environments – generally locations where discomfort glare can be a critical factor. The microprism version has a UGR value of < 19.
