Vocational special needs education and rehabilitation

The core mission of the Kiipula Foundation, which maintains the vocational college, is to provide vocational special education and rehabilitation. The college operates in nine locations, and approximately 1,300 students study at Kiipula each year. In addition to educational activities, the foundation offers local residents occupational wellbeing services, recreational leisure activities and high‑quality horticultural products.

An energy‑efficient and maintenance‑free lighting solution

It was time to modernise the lighting technology in the dining hall. Through the lighting refurbishment project, the property owner achieved significant savings in maintenance and energy costs when the old lighting system was replaced.

“At Rustholli, luminaires with compact fluorescent lamps were replaced with maintenance‑free LED luminaires with a fixed light source. The colour temperature of the old luminaires varied, and the old control gear was no longer available,” explains Reijo Immonen from Sähkö‑Jore.

“After the refurbishment, no maintenance work is required. The entire space is equipped with Airam Puck 800 luminaires with opal diffusers, producing an even and fresh 4000‑kelvin light throughout the environment.”

The prototype luminaire led to a new installation solution

Mika Lindberg from Airam delivered a sample luminaire to the site in advance, allowing the light output and colour temperature to be reviewed and jointly confirmed as excellent by the contractor, the client and the kitchen staff.
“In refurbishment projects there are often constraints that are worth reviewing in advance. That was the case here as well,” says Immonen.

“With the help of the sample luminaire, we developed C‑shaped mounting profiles for the project, allowing the luminaires to be installed sufficiently away from the ceiling in relation to the existing technical installations. This made it possible to safely bypass acoustic panels, fire detection sensors and cabling.”

Airam delivered the luminaires to the site on the agreed date. Thanks to the customised mounting profile, replacing the luminaires and carrying out the electrical installations proceeded swiftly. The client was extremely satisfied with the end result and with the scheduling of the refurbishment during the school holiday period. Due to the timing of the works, the daily routines of school staff and students did not need to be restricted in any way.

Traditional lighting control

“The space did not necessarily require dedicated lighting control, so the luminaires were connected in groups to operate with traditional push‑button control. Half‑power lighting, where every second luminaire is on, is more than sufficient for everyday use for most of the year. When all luminaires are switched on, powerful lighting can be achieved whenever needed,” Reijo Immonen summarises the outcome of the project.

Puck luminaire is suitable for a wide range of public spaces

The aluminium‑bodied Puck luminaire range is available in three diameters: ø 400, ø 610 and ø 800 mm, with colour temperature options of 3000 K or 4000 K for each size.

“The stylish and striking Puck luminaire range for public spaces is perfectly suited to this type of open environment. At Kiipula, the luminaires were surface‑mounted, but they can also be suspended using a separate wire suspension kit or supplied in a custom RAL body colour if required.

Tailored solutions

On request, Airam also supplies the luminaires with opalised prismatic diffusers for applications where glare control is particularly important,” says Mika Lindberg from Airam. On a project‑specific basis, the Puck luminaire can also be customised with Casambi, 1–10 V and Switch Dim control options, as well as different lumen packages and connection cables.
