LED strip draws the city library landscape in Oulu

The lighting of the courtyard environment of Oulu City Library was renewed in autumn 2017 by replacing traditional light sources with new technology. The floating effect of the library building above the water has been emphasized with retaining walls built on cantilevers, which are now illuminated with a continuous Airam Rigel LED strip lighting reflected in the water.

The retaining wall lighting emphasizes the architecture of the space and of the culturally and historically valuable library building. Indirect lighting implemented with light strips creates a magnificent aesthetic experience in the cityscape. Glare-free lighting creates visibility along the routes and therefore also improves the safety of people moving outdoors.

Rigel light strip

The Airam Rigel light strip used in the wall lighting is excellently suited to long installations. The strip is sold in 50-meter reels, but it can also be delivered cut to length when needed. The IP44-rated light strip is connected directly to 230 V mains voltage. The strip is available in two color temperatures, 3000 K and 4000 K. The project was carried out in cooperation with Rexel, Oulun Lasipalvelu Oy and Caverion.

A traditional city library

The roots of Oulu City Library extend back to 1877, when the municipal library institution, the public library and reading room, started operating. After many moves, the new library building opened its doors on Vänmanninsaari in 1982 in a central location facing the market square.

The library building in the Oulujoki estuary is a showcase of modern concrete architecture and an essential part of the city’s monumental center. Both the library building and the neighboring city theater were designed by the architect couple Marjatta and Martti Jaatinen. Nearly two million visitors come to the library annually.
