Reliable lighting
Finavia’s Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is an essential part of the global air transport network, where countless small details must be in order. Reliable, smoothly functioning quality lighting is one of these requirements. In autumn 2018 it was time to renovate the lighting of Terminal 1, completed in 1991. Airam delivered long-life luminaires with Casambi control to Finavia as a complete solution.
Air transport is globally interconnected, an industry of thousands of different operators. Seamless cooperation ensures that travel must be absolutely safe, smooth and straightforward. For Finavia, that means continuous development and maintenance of infrastructure.

Terminal 1’s former lighting technology was outdated: the mercury vapour lamps used as light sources in the luminaires had been withdrawn from the market and the luminaires had no dimming options at all. The colour rendering of mercury lamps was poor, meaning colours were not reproduced naturally and vividly in the space.

Wireless technology as the solution
The desired solution was a wirelessly controlled, reliable and high-quality long-life solution for general lighting in the high section of Terminal 1, service corridors on the ground floor and the T1–T2 connecting corridors between terminals. The general lighting of T2 gate area 31 A–E was also renovated. The lighting renovation aimed at energy efficiency and controllability as well as better light quality and colour rendering.
With Casambi, individual luminaires can be controlled, scheduled and dimmed wirelessly, or luminaires can be grouped and lighting controlled by group.

CASAMBI
An intelligent, flexible and secure system
Airam offered long-life luminaires to Finavia as a complete solution. Airam’s Casambi Ready range provided luminaires for all needs of the renovation site. It is important for Finavia that the chosen lighting solution is reliable. Casambi operates in an intelligent Bluetooth Mesh network where each device transmits and receives information. Devices are independently connected to each other, so the entire network does not fail if a single device malfunctions.
Sufficient light level with constant light control
With Casambi, individual luminaires can be controlled, scheduled and dimmed wirelessly, or luminaires can be grouped and lighting controlled by group. Wireless Casambi lighting can be managed with various control methods such as smartphones or tablets, light switches and motion and presence sensors.
Terminals need light 24/7 at all times of year and day – always the optimal amount without wasting energy. A sufficient lighting level is kept constant in the terminal with Casambi constant light control, which dims artificial lighting when daylight floods in through large windows. General lighting is kept moderate in the gate area both for comfort and to highlight the terminal’s retail spaces, each with its own store-specific lighting in line with the brand.

Ergonomic, glare-free light
Lighting for the T1–T2 connecting corridor between terminals and T2 gate area 31 A–E was implemented with wirelessly controlled Plata modular luminaires. Plata luminaires with microprism optics in the suspended ceiling system create pleasant, glare-free even light for the corridor and departure gate area. The appearance of the whole area was refreshed thanks to the better colour rendering of the new luminaires and a colour temperature of 4000 kelvin.
Futura Tech luminaires from Airam’s Casambi Ready range, lighting VSS spaces, were chosen for Finavia’s civil defence shelter. The Futura Tech luminaire series is intended for industrial spaces, warehouses and car parks, including cold environments. Casambi-controlled low-profile steel-bodied Optimus luminaires with 4000 kelvin LED light sources were installed in service corridors.
Savings in installation and energy costs
Wireless Casambi control brought savings in both installation costs and energy when old non-dimmable lighting was converted to modern controllable lighting. Airam’s Highbay industrial luminaires work excellently in the terminal’s high, open space. Luminaires were installed as wirelessly controlled units in existing busbars and no separate control cabling was needed thanks to wireless control.
In Terminal 1, 384 old 125 W mercury vapour luminaires were replaced with new 150 W Highbay LED luminaires. Only 25 per cent of the luminous flux of the efficient high-bay luminaires was used, which saves energy and extends luminaire lifetime. Although the total number of luminaires decreased, lighting quality improved significantly.
Energy consumption fell by 75 per cent
The lighting renovation of Terminal 1 at Finavia’s Helsinki-Vantaa Airport was completed in spring 2019. “The new lighting system achieved significant energy savings. Energy consumption was reduced by 75 per cent from the original level,” says Finavia maintenance manager Ari Liukkonen, and adds: “Good lighting improves the comfort of the area and the customer experience and creates a cheerful appearance for the environment.”
Project sales support services play a major role
Liukkonen thanks Airam’s knowledgeable sales staff, product development and support services for good service and teamwork. In addition to commissioning and control training for Casambi control systems, Airam’s project sales support service provides DIALux and energy saving calculations for project sites. The earlier a project can be reviewed, the greater the benefit for the customer.
